Headteacher Message!
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the Summer Term, I hope you all had a lovely break! This term is always our busiest but it’s the term I love the most. I particularly enjoy seeing the children playing on the field and our Sports Days as we can all enjoy being together. Although it does not yet feel very summery the children can now wear their summer uniform.
I have introduced our value for this term ‘curiosity’ and the importance of exploring the big questions. We started to consider what could be a ‘big’ questions and where we would be able to find the answers (if there are answers). I am collating our ‘big’ questions so that they can be shared before half term with the school community and an example is, Do trees talk when we’re not around?
This week Mr Reeves, Headteacher at Thamesmead, visited Ashley and enjoyed his tour. He was introduced to the children in year 6 who will be joining Thamesmead in September. I am looking forward to developing more links, with Thamesmead and the other local secondary schools, over the next year.
Today, I met some of the trustees of the Charity of Robert Phillips who kindly supported the building of the Harmony Centre. It was a pleasure to show them the building and explain how it is being used for the arts, in particular the teaching of music. We are very grateful for their ongoing support with offering music scholarships.
A reminder to those parents whose children have been offered a place for Reception in September to please accept your place as soon as possible. We can’t wait to have you here and will inform you of next steps very soon.
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Ratcliff
Staffing Update -
Extended Care for the New Academic Year
We are currently working behind the scenes on how we can extend the club provision for the next academic year. As you can appreciate it is a very popular provision and the club has grown significantly over the past few years. Staffing constraints have made it challenging for us to increase the numbers and therefore we have been unable to offer places to those on the waiting list this year. Once we have a plan on what we can offer for the next academic year we will communicate this out to all. Please bear with us while we work on this but be rest assured we will be putting a plan in place. Thank you for your continued support.
REMINDER New Absence Reporting - StudyBugs
Ashley has recently. introduced a new, more efficient and secure system for reporting your child’s absence due to illness, called Studybugs.
If you haven’t already, please get the free Studybugs app, or register on the Studybugs website, and use it to tell us whenever your child’s ill and unable to attend school.
Get the app or register now (https://studybugs.com/about/parents)
Top 3 reasons to use Studybugs
- It helps us know sooner if your child is unaccounted for.
- It’s quick and easy to register and use and automatically reminds you to keep us posted.
- You’ll be helping the NHS and other public health organisations improve children’s health. (https://studybugs.com/about/schools)
The Past Fortnight-
Year 6 -
This week, Year 6 visited the Xcel centre to take part in junior citizenship. Junior citizenship allows the children to speak to different agencies and learn about how these can help us as we transition to secondary school and become more independent. The children were able to engage with transport police and network rail about staying safe around the train tracks. Barclays bank about using a bank account responsibly and scams, Xcel leisure about water safety and many more.

Year 5 -
Year 5 have enjoyed the beginning of their new learning theme: What does nature do for us? While in Science, they have been busy dissecting and naming the parts of a flowering plant, in art they have been exploring different media to draw plants and flowers. They were able to make comparisons between the different effects and were very pleased with their sketches.
-Miss Hood
Year 2
This Science this week, Year 2 have been identifying man-made materials and natural materials. They have used these items to create collages.
- Mrs Van Der Schaff
Year 1
Year 1 have been learning about 'My Body' in science. We were treated to a fantastic circuits workout with Lily from Tigerfit UK. We used our different body parts to do the activities such as battle ropes, lunges, lifting dumbbells and jumping.
"I loved it- I got so sweaty!"
"My favourite was doing a push-up and jumping over the bag."
“It was so much fun!”
I'm sure lots of children will be joining Lily's classes on Saturday mornings as they had a great time!

Poetry Battle - Hoe Bridge School -
Just before the Easter holidays, 8 children from across KS2 took part in a poetry battle at Hoe Bridge School in Old Woking. Although we came home empty-handed, the children presented their learned poems with confidence, enthusiasm and great passion. They made the judges and audience laugh, they made Mrs Athersuch cry (not difficult) and they should be very proud of themselves for performing poetry in front of people they didn’t know. We’re quite inspired to host our own! Stay tuned!
Library Volunteers -
We are so happy to report that both our school libraries are very popular places to visit and the children are responding well to the new system (organised by genre). Mrs Athersuch is looking for further volunteers for an afternoon or morning to help tidying and organise the non-fiction section of the junior library. The date would be later in May or possibly June. Please get in touch with Mrs Athersuch if you are interested.
Ashley's Global Family -
Thank you for the fantastic response to our recent survey enquiring about your links with countries around the world. The larger Ashley community extends across all continents of the globe, across 36 countries! We will be looking to celebrate these fantastic connections within school and it's not too late to let us know about your special connections if you did not fill in the form - just email into the office for the attention of Mrs Harris.
Friends of Ashley Update -
Ashley May Ball Saturday 18th May at Sandown Race Course
Expect an evening of glitz and glamour, swap your school run chic for diamonds. Dancing the night away, enjoy a kid free evening with your friends, all while raising money. The return of the May Ball is fundraising for a new immersive and engaging woodland trail. The school needs to raise money to start laying the groundwork, to create a beautiful natural area for every child to enjoy. If you’re still wondering, is it worth it, we have put together a wonderful evening with Sandown Race Course. You’ll get a three course meal and drink. There are money can’t buy auction prizes, a raffle and entertainment. Tickets cost £75 per person and can be purchased here https://t.ly/q0Uin
Dates for your diary

Greenredeem -
The results were published from Greenredeem/Rethink waste campaign we were involved in. Ashley came 6th which is fantastic - a huge thank you to all the parents and children who helped us! Unfortunately, only the top 5 were awarded funds in this round. On contacting Greenredeem to ask if we could apply again this was their response -
"we must give different schools a chance to apply before we offer it out to schools from the previous round - this time all the spots were taken so we never offered it out to your cohort"
We will look to take part again in the future, keep an look out in future newsletters.
