No.9 - 30th January 2026

Headteachers Message!
Good afternoon,
Well, what a wet fortnight we've had! The rain has been absolutely relentless. We try to get outside as much as possible so please make sure your child has a waterproof coat with them every day.
I had the pleasure of joining our Year 6 pupils on their residential visit to Avon Tyrrell today. We are incredibly proud of the children for their resilience, courage and the positivity they have shown throughout the activities.
A huge thank you to the dedicated members of staff who have volunteered their time to accompany the group. Their commitment ensures that these memorable experiences can take place, and we are very grateful for their support.
Next week, we’re excited to welcome you to the VIP event where you will have an opportunity to look at your child's/children's books. Then the following week we have our virtual Parent Consultation Evenings. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s learning, progress, and behaviour so far this year. The link to School Cloud will be shared next week. Working together is key to helping every child reach their potential, and Parent Consultation Evenings are an important step in that process.
I would like to offer my congratulations to our Year 5 football team and our Year 6 boys’ football team for their fantastic recent wins. Both teams demonstrated outstanding teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout their matches, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. Their hard work in training is clearly paying off, and they have represented the school brilliantly. Well done to all involved!
Have a great weekend
Mrs Ratcliff
Reminders -
Book you Chinese New Year meal -
SCHOOL LUNCHES - Please below the new school lunch menu which will start after half term. If your child/ren normally has a school meal, please can we remind you to order a school meal in advance. Ordering closes on the Friday before and meals cannot be ordered after this time.

Arbor - Please can we ask you to log into the Arbor app. We ask that you add/check the following information:
- 3 Emergency contacts
- Medical information (including GP surgery and any medical needs)
- Ethnicity
- Religion
Going forward you can change address/telephone or any information through the app directly, the school will receive a notification and your details will be updated accordingly.

PERSONAL APPEARENCE - Hair should be neat and tidy and tied away from the face. Shoulder-length hair must, for safety and hygiene reasons, be tied back daily. Hair accessories should be plain in style and in school colours. Dyed, gelled, highlighted hair or braiding with coloured cotton and beads is not allowed. Patterns should not be shaved into hair.
Nail varnish, make up and temporary tattoos etc. should not be worn in school.
No jewellery should be worn to school. We prefer no earrings at all, but if necessary small flat, plain, metal stud earrings should be worn. There should only be one earring in each ear. On PE days, children should leave their earrings at home and not wear them to school.
If a child has just had their ears pierced, they should wear their earrings to school but must remove them by themselves for PE and should replace them immediately afterwards. Staff members at Ashley will not attempt to remove earrings.
Watches may be worn (not smart watches) although Ashley accepts no liability for any items that are lost or damaged.
A smart uniform is part of the culture at our school and an important aspect of our pastoral care. Some items are only available from the school’s supplier, County Schoolwear: www.countyschoolwear.co.uk/ashley
We would really appreciate your co-operation in ensuring your child is wearing the correct uniform to and from school.
The Friends of Ashley also sell and accept donations of preloved (second-hand) uniform. Please click here for more information
All items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name, including shoes and trainers.
The Past Fortnight

To mark World Religion Day, we started the week with children leading assembly to explain how world faiths and religion show care and love to the world and each other.

The assembly reinforced the important message that no matter what religion someone follows, caring for others and showing respect are at the heart of all faiths. These values help us build a kinder, more understanding world.

Y5 -
Year 5 have had the fantastic opportunity to learn more about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings through an immersive drama workshop. The children had great fun getting to know more about the life they led, the battles they fought and the hatred they had for one another. They had a fantastic time, and it was enjoyed by all.
-Miss May
Y4-

This week in art, Year 4 have been exploring the colourful and imaginative style of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The children have been experimenting with bold lines, patterns, and vibrant shapes as they prepare for their Great Works project, where they will design their own transfer stamps and print them onto card. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity shine.
- Mr Denman
Y2 -

Year 2 have been visited by Eric Daniels from Surrey Fire Services. The children were extremely well behaved and engaged during these sessions. A huge thank you for visiting us at Ashley School again, Eric!
- Mrs Van Der Schaff
Y1 -

Year 1 have been enjoying exploring programming through the use of Beebots. They have learnt to programme instructions, thinking about position and direction, all whilst using their communication skills as a team.
-Mrs Luxford
Reception -

In Reception, we have been very busy this week turning recycling material into amazing vehicles! The children used their big imaginations to make cars, rockets and boats out of recycling. We have learned how to use tape, glue, and scissors to join things together. We have also been learning that old things can be reused to make something new!
- Mrs Semec
BIG QUESTION TIME -

Rev Jonny and Rev Kirsty visited us last week for our first BIG QUESTIONS session with Year 2 in the Infant Library Pod. Big questions included "How was the world created?" "Is God real?" and "Why does God love us?" Children, who had posed their big questions about God and Life during a pop up prayer space last term, were able to ask their questions to the St Mary's team in person.
All the year 2 children were respectful and listened excellently to the big question discussion. One pupil reflected that the reason God loves us "because we pray to him even if we don't need him, we always remember him." The church team will return next month for questions from Year 3.
Do you have a big question? For any children who would like to submit a new question - there is a post box on the windowsill opposite the school entrance, with pencils and slips for you to use. Get your thinking caps on!

Can You Help Us Fill Our Daily Mile Track?
We're looking to improve our Daily Mile running track around the field by adding more bark chip or wood chip to the surfacing. The track has become very muddy, and we'd like to make it more accessible for all our pupils throughout the year.
We need your help! If you or anyone you know has:
- Access to bark chip or wood chip materials
- Contacts with local tree surgeons, landscaping companies, or garden centres who might be able to donate or supply materials at a reduced cost
- Equipment or expertise to help with laying the bark chip when it arrives
...we'd love to hear from you!
Please contact the school office on 01932 227695 or email info@ashley.surrey.sch.uk if you can help in any way.

Well Done -

Congratulations to our Y5 and Y6 students that participated in the Surrey Schools cross country championship that was held on 19th January in Priory Park, Reigate. Around 600 students representing schools across Surrey came together to compete, running 1.7K (Y5), and 2K (Y6).
We are incredibly proud of all our athletes for demonstrating our Ashley values and for giving it your absolute all out there on the course. Well done! A special mention to Alfie L (Y5) who came 2nd in his race! Alfie has now been invited to try out for the Surrey Schools Association.
